Gilbert Arizona History
Gilbert was named after the property owner who sold his property to the railroad. His name was William "Bobby" Gilbert. This progressive town was once a prime farming community, fueled by the construction of the Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals in 1911. In the 1970s, the Town Council approved a strip annexation that encompassed 53 square miles of county land. The population then was only 1,971, but leadership was preparing for the growth they knew would occur.
Gilbert Arizona was founded in 1891 and the incorporation date of Gilbert is the 6 July 1920.

Gilbert-Gilbert Community College (CGCC), one of the 12 Maricopa Community Colleges, opened in 1985 and has grown to more than 7,000 students.
